The attack on sanjo palace

When I knew we were coming up to the Japanese art section in the book I already knew I had to have a blog dedicated to it. I've always had a love for Japanese art. I love the way they do their drawings and the way they represent things so differently. For instance the fire in this picture is just awesome. The way it was drawn in there with the smoke and everything must've been crazy hard to do back in the day. If you look closely you can see all the details that went into this painting alone. Just planning that out is pretty amazing you'd have to start and just keep going with it. Just like we talked about in class it plays out sort of like a scroll. You really have to take the time and go from each side of the painting to get the full story. I guess this would've been the old japanese way of making an action movie haha. Like we talked about in class I actually almost kind of like the fact that the roofs are all black. It is just sort of how Japanese artists do. I guess the painter just didn't want to take away from the battle itself.

  1. I don't think I like the black roofs. They're really distracting, I think. It makes me wonder why the artist added them in like that. Maybe he (or she) wanted us to look at the buildings in particular?

  2. I agree with Cassie. I find the blackness of the roofs to be distracting and actually takes away from battle scene. It seems that if the painter gave them such a dark value then they must have some significance.

  3. I love this piece a lot. In fact I almost picked it myself. I love the way the Japanese depict fire and water. I love the organic shapes of the flames and how they flow.

  4. I would have dedicated a piece to the Japanese, but I completely didn't realize that it was coming up, but this picture looks awesome! I like how it flows, and it reminds me of Okami.
