The Curse of King Tutankhamun
So when I found out we were going into Egyptian art I was actually really interested into hearing about King Tut and seeing how his history would come into play. Ever since I was little I knew about King Tut because I went to the Franklin Institute to go see the exhibit and also I was kind of a history channel buff and would watch random documentary's that would come on it. I would watch the ones on King Tut and heard all about the curses and such that befell the crew that found him. Me being a kid at the time I got all scared and paranoid that something like that would happen to me. So like when I went to see the exhibit i was all nervous about what I'd say or get near cause I was like "I'm gonna die if he gets all angry at me" haha. I still to this day think it was crazy how everything happened to Howard Carter and his crew but I realized that King Tut doesn't have it out for me cause I saw his exhibit. I also think it's crazy how young he was when he was ruling just being that young and having all that pressure to rule a kingdom. But yeah i'm gonna say there was defiantly some kind of conspiracy to his death cause even to this day they're still unsure of what killed him. Well now I'm hoping I still stay in his good graces after making this blog cause i'm not trying to develop a random spot on my face and die.

So what do you think about the actual art piece itself? Do you think it is worthy of a pharaoh? Or do you think it is way too expensive a piece for someone who ruled for such a short time? Do you like the image that they were trying to portray for the afterlife?
ReplyDeleteI always thought the mask itself was such a trademark of Egyptian art. Like that mask always symbolized Egypt whenever you saw it even if you didn't know who was for. I think for a pharaoh his age it was a lot, solid gold and even if he was assassinated it shows that he was still loved. Also you can see the perfection they were trying to for with the mask for the afterlife.
ReplyDeleteI like that you made a blog post dedicated entirely to this one mask, as it is quite deserving!
ReplyDeleteThis is probably one of my favorite pieces of ancient Egyptian art as it solidifies the fact that the Egyptians were indeed great craftsmen.
I loved Egypt when I was a kid, and king tut was my favorite. The colors on this mask are amazing. I wish I could have gone to the exhibit to see it.
ReplyDeleteI think this piece is pretty awesome. a lot of color and the sense that this guy was really important are what i think is the best part of this. With you on the curse thing by the way, may tut rest in peace and not dole out a plague. haha
ReplyDeleteI really liked this mask as well! I love the story behind. The fact that this was made for such a young king is sad but still interesting.
